The Indianapolis Colts release DT Ed Johnson

The Colts have released 25-year old DT Ed Johnson.  He played in 4 games for the Colts this season and he made 11 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss.  There must be something going on behind the scenes with Johnson as this seems to be a odd time for the Colts to give up on him.  We’ll keep you posted.

Head coach Jim Caldwell said today that this move was strictly performance based, but I’m not so sure I buy that though. Johnson is a pretty talented DT, but he has always had character issues. He was undrafted in 2007 because of a few incidents off the field but the Colts took a chance on him that year and he played great all year. The next year was different though, as this year wasn’t the first time the Colts released him since they dropped him after one game in 2008 due to a marijuana arrest. He also violated the NFL’s substance abuse program this year and had to sit out the opener. So no, I don’t think this is just performance based and I think the Colts were just getting sick of all the negative things he brought to the team.

I agree with you Andrew. Something must have been going on that the Colts have not revealed yet. With his age and talent you just don’t cut guys like that for no reason.
