The Colts had another outstanding season even though it ended with a thud last week.  The Colts won the AFC South again last season with a sterling 13-3 regular season record.  Dungy has now been the head coach of the Colts for 6 seasons and he has compiled a record of 73-23 (.760 %) during the regular season.  He has a 7-5 (.583 %) post season record with the Colts which includes a Super Bowl Championship in the 2006 season.  Dungy has now been a head coach in the NFL for 12 years with the Colts and Bucs and he has compiled a 127-65 (.661 %) record in his NFL career and he is 9-9 (.500 %) in the post season.

San Diego Chargers 28, Indianapolis Colts 24

The Colts got beat for the second time this season by the Chargers but this time it ended their year.  Peyton Manning completed 33 of 48 passes for 402 yards with 3 TD passes and 2 interceptions.  But both of the interceptions really hurt the Colts in this game.  Joseph Addai couldn’t find any running room as he rushed for 43 yards on 13 carries (3.3 ypc) and he also caught 9 passes for 67 yards (7.4 avg).  Dallas Clark (6 rec, 95 yards), Anthony Gonzalez (4 rec, 79 yards) and Reggie Wayne (7 rec, 76 yards) each caught a TD pass in this game.  The Colts finished up with 44 yards rushing on 18 carries (2.4 ypc) and they also completed 33 of 48 passes for 402 yards.

The Colts defense didn’t play too well but it was led by tackle Edward Johnson (9 tackles) and safety Antoine Bethea (7 tackles).  The Chargers finished up with 99 yards rushing on 30 carries (3.3 ypc) and they also completed 17 of 23 passes for 312 yards.

Indianapolis Colts vs. San Diego Chargers

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General Colts Chatter,The Playoffs,This Week's Matchup Report by admin on Sunday 13 January 2008 at 12:33 pm

On November 11th of this season the Chargers beat the Colts 23-21 in San Diego.  It’s unlikely that the Chargers will pick off Peyton Manning six times again like they did November 11th, so they will need to play mistake free football to have a chance to win on the road.

The Colts have been very good at stopping the run this season so the Chargers will need to throw the football often on first down to loosen up the Colts secondary.  They will need Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers to repeat last week’s performance against the Titans but that will likely be hard to do against corners Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden.  With that in mind look for a lot of passes to LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates (if he can play).  That will put big pressure on outside linebackers Freddy Keiaho and Tyjuan Hagler.  Still, the Chargers won’t forget to run the ball considering that they have the best running back on the planet.

The Colts will likely try to mix the run in more than usual with Joseph Addai taking on the interior of the Chargers defense.  That’s because Peyton Manning had one of his worst games ever in the regular season meeting with the Chargers and Colts as he threw six pickoffs.  Look for Manning to keep the passing game short to Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark.  The Colts must get good blocking from their tackles or the Colts could be in trouble with Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips blitzing off of the edges.

Peyton Manning leads the Indianapolis Colts to another division title

While Tom Brady was getting all of the publicity Peyton Manning was quietly having another outstanding season.  Manning played in all 16 games (as usual) this season and he completed 337 of 515 passes (65.4%) for 4,040 yards with 31 TD passes and 14 interceptions (98.0 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 20 times for -5 yards (-0.3 ypc) with 3 TD runs.  Manning has now played in 160 games in his NFL career and he has completed 3,468 of 5,405 passes (64.2%) for 41,626 yards with 306 TD passes and 153 interceptions (94.7 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 289 times for 696 yards (2.4 ypc) with 16 TD runs.

The Colts better hope Peyton Manning stays healthy for a long time because Jim Sorgi would be a gigantic drop off.  Sorgi played in 4 games this season for the Colts and he completed 18 of 36 passes (50%) for 132 yards with 1 TD pass and 0 interceptions (68.3 QB Rating).  He also carried the ball 6 times for a loss of 4 yards (-0.7 ypc).  Sorgi has now played in 13 games in his NFL career and he has completed 77 of 126 passes (61.1%) for 751 yards with 6 TD passes and 1 interception (90.4 QB Rating).  He also has carried the ball 26 times for -8 yards rushing (-0.3 ypc).
